Welcome To Bailey Tabernacle C. M. E. Church

The Christian (Colored) Methodist Episcopal Church was born on December 15, 1870 in Jackson, Tennessee at Liberty Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. Reverend Isaac Lane, later to become the fifth Bishop, was the first pastor. It will always be historic, for it was there that the organizing General Conference was held. Liberty Church is now affectionately known as Mother Liberty. Some think the name "Liberty" was prophetic. It was there that a great step toward liberty, freedom and dignity was taken by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church with the blessings and help of the Southern Methodists. Contributory to good relations between the two churches was the fact that the M.E. Church, South gave all church properties used by Blacks to their duly appointed trustees. This was indeed an act of brotherly love. Another important fact to be noted was that the act of setting up the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church did not divorce it from the family of Methodism. The first Bishops, William Henry Miles and Richard H. Vandehost, of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church were consecrated by Bishops Paine and McTyeire of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Thus connecting C.M.E. Bishops forever to the unbroken lineage of Thomas Coke and Francis Ashbury, the first American Bishops and John Wesley a Presbyterian of the Church of England and father of the World Methodism. Following the organization of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in Jackson, First Methodist Church at Tuscaloosa, in December, 1870, helped its last 45 Black members establish a local church. Thus Bailey Tabernacle Christian (Colored) Methodist Episcopal Church was founded December, 1870 with the last 45 colored members from the First Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa. It is named for its pastor, Virgil Bailey.
